I’m on the journey to become a Special Education Teacher.
My name is Stephany, and I am a teacher in training, a rookie teacher.
“Defining Equity” was created as a reflective college project. This blog contains a collection of my thoughts and reflections throughout my journey to becoming an educator.
I am thankful to my former teachers for the support and dedication they have given me. Over the years, working with people in the community, I have practice self-reflection with the goal of getting to know myself better. In the processed, I discovered a strong desire to serve, to teach, and to work with youth. My sister, who attended high school in the Bronx, often came home with many questions about her experiences. She asked about her history, made insightful observations about her experiences in a charter school, and expressed many fears about going away for college as a person of color.
My sister’s high school provided her with incredible opportunities to learn about academia, but she needs concrete proof that she can succeed in college. It was through conversations with my sister that I realized my education and experiences in higher education correctly position me to provide guidance and encouragement.
Unwittingly, I have already been teaching my sister and her friends. She’s off to college know, and I am proud of the person she is becoming. I want to be an educator because of people like my sister, like my former teachers, and because I believe culturally inclusive education can make a difference.
